Sump Pump Installation | St Louis

sump pump installation under construction

If you are considering any form of Basement Waterproofing in St Louis, then a sump pump may be an ideal part of any solution. Given the various vulnerabilities of your basement and how susceptible it can be to water and moisture, looking at various different options means that you can fully protect your basement and your home. Sump pumps are an efficient solution to not only solving previous problems with water, but also giving a preventative solution to avoid future issues.

Do I Need a Sump Pump?

The location of your home may be a major deciding factor when it comes to choosing sump pump installation. Is your property in a flat area with poor drainage? Does the surrounding soil experience drainage issues? Is the property relatively low lying and below the local water table? Or have you experienced any water problems such as basement flooding in the past? And if you have an existing pump in place, how old is it? Submersible pumps last around 10 years, while pedestal pumps can last around 25 years. If your answer to any of these questions is ‘yes’, then you need to talk to NG Foundation Repair of St. Louis about installing a sump pump at your home.

Submersible Sump Pump

Submersible Sump Pumps are placed within your actual sump pit itself – where the water collects – and is a quieter option than pedestal pumps. A submersible sump pump works by having special sensors which detect when the water in your sump pit reaches a certain level. At that point, the motor – which is enclosed in a waterproof casing – kicks into operation ad begins to pump the water out of the pit and to the designated drainage outlet. Where needed, we can install more than one submersible sump pump in the pit, offering secondary and even backup options to ensure that it will never fail.

Pedestal Sump Pump

Pedestal pumps are located outwith the actual sump pit, as usually the pit itself is too small or narrow to accommodate a submersible pump. The downside of this type is that if you actively use your basement, then the noise from the pump can be very noticeable. The pedestal pump comes in two parts; the motor unit housed above your pit and the hose unit leading into the pit. We find that cast iron pedestal pump are the best as they offer longevity and durability.

Which to Choose?

Submersible pumps are becoming more popular though it should be noted that they have shorter lives and are more expensive. But they are more efficient and far less noisy than a pedestal pump. Submersible pumps are also more powerful so can pump faster and have a backup battery in case of power cuts. Pedestal pumps are cheaper, have a longer life, and are easier to repair. But they are less powerful, noisier, and take up more room. Unsure? Speak to our experienced staff for advice.
